In the midst of university student strikes over the delayed payment, the Ministry of Education will distribute the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans for University and TVET students on Tuesday, November 7. Ezekiel Machogu, the cabinet secretary for education, said in a statement on Friday that HELB has finished processing loans for TVETS and first-year college students under the new Higher Education Funding Model.
The Higher Education Loans Boards has finalised the processing of loans for First Year students in universities and TVETs under the New Higher Education Funding Model,” said Machogu.
“The Ministry wishes to inform successful applicants the funds will be disbursed to their respective universities and student accounts beginning Tuesday, November 7, 2023.” He contacted the students who had submitted loan applications through the Higher Education Financing Portal to confirm the accuracy of the bank information they had provided. The announcement follows several protests and demonstrations by students at different universities against the delays in the cash’ release.
Students at Machakos University called for action from the Education Ministry on Thursday as they ran amok with police officers and anti-riot officials. Beginning at 8:00 am, the students’ bonfires along the university’s entrance road caused traffic to be completely stopped. In retaliation, police used tear gas to scatter the kids. The similar thing happened at the beginning of October when students from Multimedia University stopped Magadi Road, which is the major entrance to Ongata Rongai Town in Kajiado County.
