Students drowned during a school trip
On Saturday, while on a field excursion, five elementary school students from Arap Moi Primary School in Uasin Gishu County perished by drowning. According to reports, the terrible incident happened when the students were visiting an Eldoret amusement park at around five o’clock in the evening.
They took turns boating in a man-made lake during their tour, and sadly, one of the boats sank. The students were preparing for the KCPE (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education) tests, which were scheduled to start on Monday, October 30.
A sixth student reportedly made it out alive and was taken to a nearby hospital for specialized care. Prior to funeral arrangements, the deceased were brought to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH).
Parents flocked to the school after the accident, demanding explanations from the management about what had happened on the trip. To investigate further, an emergency meeting of the Sub-County Security Committee was called.
Parents were overcome with emotions as they processed the events that had transpired and the loss of their loved ones just two days before the national examinations. At least 1.4 million students are scheduled to take the KCPE exam in 2023.
The Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) will be administered to I.2 million students, and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) will be administered to 903,206 students. October 30 to November 24 is when the national exams will take place.
