Nyandarua National Polytechnic Students Strike
Students from Nyandarua National Polytechnic protested peacefully on Friday against the growing level of insecurity surrounding the school, which resulted in the loss of a staff member on Monday of last week, by staging protests along the Nyahururu-Olkalou highway to Oljoro Orok.
The school’s auditor for the Student Council, Peter Kibe, was slain on October 23, 2023, by unknown assailants. The students voiced their concerns about an increase in muggings and robberies in a video.
The students marched on the school grounds, chanting and holding placards calling for the government to intervene. It was also mentioned that the thieves were well-known for robbing people and riding off on motorcycles.
One of the female students told the journalists, “He died because of the insecurities in the school compound. We are here because the insecurity has been too much, and as ladies, we feel even we are not safe.” Additionally, they asked police to bolster security around residential areas, such as retail malls, hostels, and footpaths.
“We demand justice for Kibe and the school lighting system, and administration has denied us the blessing to build our demonstrations now,” said a different youngster.
According to accounts, on October 23, 2023, a gang of individuals harassed and beat Kibe and his pals while robbing them of their possessions. After the incident, Kibe was taken to the hospital but died from massive blood loss.
The rise in larceny and burglaries in Nyandarua County two months ago incited protests from locals and citizens. The locals requested that the police step in after reporting multiple instances of stock theft, burglary, and robbery.
