TSC CEO to Account For Sh6.4 Billion Spent on Recruitment
Representative Joyce Kamene of Machakos County has asked the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to furnish information regarding the use of the Sh6.4 billion allotted in Supplementary Budget I of the 2022–2023 Financial Year for teacher recruitment.
She especially requests that TSC provide information on the number of teachers hired based on gender, county, and people with disabilities. She also requests details regarding the likelihood that the 26,000 people hired as teacher interns will find employment.
Furthermore, Kamene is looking for details regarding TSC’s backup plans for ensuring the interns’ livelihoods after their internships end. She has demanded that TSC provide a summary of its action plan in order to guarantee equity and fairness in upcoming teacher hiring processes and the proper placement of educators in special needs schools across the country.
Additionally, Kamene has requested an explanation from TSC of the monitoring and assessment instruments that are currently being used to gauge how well teachers and school administrators are being trained in the competency-based curriculum. This request is being made in light of the difficulties parents encounter when helping their kids with their schoolwork.
It is noteworthy that parties involved in education have voiced concerns regarding political meddling in the hiring of teachers, citing claims that politicians have intimidated and harassed TSC employees.
Fairness and openness in the selection and employment of new teachers have been demanded by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET).
