Teachers detained for protesting the TSC’s decision to fire them
Teachers who were protesting the Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) decision to stop them were teargassed by police forces. According to rumors, instructors who had complained about the level of security in the area at North Eastern had been tricked into signing letters of transfer.
The teachers were fired from their jobs after being handed interdiction letters rather than transfer letters. They protested by marching to Upperhil after learning that TSC had decided to terminate their employment.
According to reports, a teacher was hurt during an altercation with the police. Ten cops who were interdicted have been arrested as the injured police officer is being transported to the hospital.
“You can’t come here and shut down the government. One of the police officers was seen on camera telling the teachers, “We’ll deal with you today. The instructors dared the police to use tear gas on them and said they wouldn’t move until their complaints were heard.
In North Eastern Kenya, more than 129 teachers from various parts of the nation have refused to go to work because they want better protection or to be transferred tosafer areas. As a punitive step, TSC has already issued interdiction letters to 60 of the 129 teachers, stressing that they are stifling education in the unstable North Eastern.
On Sunday, Julius Melly, the chair of the National Assembly’s education committee, requested that the instructors who had been suspended be allowed to return. “When your life is in danger, you cannot teach. When someone is threatening your life, you cannot take care of a child, the Tinderet Member of Parliament said.
