New Circular With Early School Closing Dates
A new circular from the Ministry of Education, dated October 13, 2023, is directed primarily to County and Sub County Directors. The third term’s modified school closing dates are described in this circular. Originally, schools were supposed to be closed on October 27, 2023, however that day fell on KCPE and KPSEA candidates’ practice days. The Ministry has chosen to move up the end of term three in order to accommodate this significant event.
On October 25, 2024, nursery, primary, and secondary schools will now formally end the academic year to make room for events related to national examinations. The KPSEA and KILEA exams will be administered in place of the KCPE in the forthcoming academic year.
The first term will run 13 weeks under the new academic calendar for 2024, the second term will last 14 weeks, and the third term will last 9 weeks. Additionally, the timing of the national tests is impacted by this shift in the school closing date, making it important.
The KPSEA and KCPE exams for students in grades six and eight will be administered from October 30 to November 2, 2023. On the other side, the KCSE exams will start on November 3 and last until November 24, 2023.
Notably, the 2-6-3-3-3 Competency-Based Curriculum will replace the 8-4-4 method as it serves the final cohort of KCPE students. About 2.3 million applicants are anticipated to take the KCPE and KCSE exams this year, according to data from the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC). 903,260 students will be taking the KCSE examinations, while 1,415,315 candidates will be taking the KCPE exams.
The 1,282,574 students in Grade Six who will be sitting the KPSEA exams have been confirmed as candidates by KNEC CEO David Njengere. The KCSE, KCPE, and KPSEA tests in 2023 will employ a combined total of 1,143 containers, with separate distribution facilities for each exam.
For this year’s national exams, 223,223 teachers have been approved by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to act as supervisors and invigilators. The marking process is scheduled to start on November 27 and last through December 15, 2023. An additional 37,731 instructors have been vetted to serve as examiners.
