Cooking Gas Prices Rise at Record Rate

Just over a month after costs at most stores dropped to around Ksh1,000, Kenyan households will now pay an additional Ksh500 to replenish a 6 kilogram Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). According to a spot check on Wednesday, sellers in the counties of Nairobi and Nakuru have raised their rates from Ksh950 to Ksh1,400.

Retailers in Nakuru have increased the costs of 3 kg of gas to Ksh650, 6 kg to Ksh1,400, and 13 kg to Ksh3,200.Gas price increases will intensify the strain on families already grappling with rising food and power bills.

Prices are significantly less expensive along Waiyaki Way in places like Uthiru, 87,  Kinoo, Muthiga, and its surrounds, where buyers must pay Ksh1,200 for a 6kg  cylinder, Ksh3,160 for a 13kg cylinder, and Ksh550 for a 3kg cylinder. The price increases also occur at a time when most families are no longer able to  afford kerosene, which is mostly utilized by low-income households.

Retail costs in Kihunguro and Ruiru for a 6 kg cylinder are Ksh1,200, a 13 kg cylinder  is Ksh3,160, and a 3 kg cylinder is Ksh550. A merchant said that the high rise in cooking gas costs was caused by the month of  September’s increase in fuel prices. “Gas prices are connected to fuel prices, so as they rise, the price of gas also rises. At first, we charged between Ksh2,200 and Ksh2,400 for a 6kg cylinder. Currently, prices have increased to an all-time high, according to one of the sellers.

At the time, the government’s elimination of the Value Added Tax (VAT) on LPG gas in order to encourage clean energy was blamed for the decline in cooking gas costs below Ksh1,000 for a 6kg cylinder. The Cabinet has accepted a proposal to significantly reduce the tax assessed on LPG, which may result in lower pricing as the nation transitions to renewable energy.
