Government to import tax-free yellow maize
The government intends to begin importing yellow maize without paying any duties, according to President William Ruto.According to the President, the change will lower the high cost of living.Ruto stated that money has already been set aside by the government through the Treasury for the duty-free imports, but he withheld more details of the arrangement.
“Sehemu ingine tumekubaliana katika budget tumepitisha ya kwamba tutakuwa tunaagiza yellow maize duty-free na tumekubaliana na wizara ya kwamba tunataka kupunguza gharama ya chakula ya mifugo yetu,” Ruto said. This translates to: In other sectors, we have agreed in the budget that we passed we shall consider duty-free importation of yellow maize and have agreed with the ministry that we shall lower the cost of animal feed.
The President added that in order to assist farmers in boosting food production, the government has reduced the cost of fertilizer. In addition to cutting the price of fertilizer, Ruto stated that “we are also investigating the cost of other commodities, such as cotton seeds and other items, in an effort to lower the cost of living because this is the reasonable course of action.”The Head of State promised that the government would also lower farmers’ costs for animal feed.
The Cabinet gave its approval for the importation of duty-free yellow maize in August. To lower the price of feeding livestock, the government announced the duty-free importation of yellow maize and lifted levies on animal supplies.
