For the KCSE Exam in 2023, the Ministry of Education has implemented a new grading scheme. Only Mathematics and one language subject (English, Kiswahili, or Kenyan Sign Language) will be required under this new system, according to Education CS Ezekiel Machogu.

The performance of the candidate’s five best topics will also be taken into account by KNEC (Kenya National Examinations Council), in addition to these two required subjects. The number of students who will now be eligible for university admission, diplomas, and TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) programs at the Certificate and Artisan levels is anticipated to rise as a result of this adjustment.

In the previous approach, the five mandatory topics from three clusters—Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, two sciences, and one humanities—were used to generate mean grades for the KCSE exams.

This new grading scheme aims to better take into account the interests and skills of students. It attempts to make sure that students who have a particular interest in a field, such as engineering or medical, are not prevented from enrolling in these courses just because a topic that wasn’t related to their field of choice caused their overall mean grade to drop.

The emphasis is on using grading in the national education system for certification purposes and not solely for placing students in higher learning institutions. The focus is on literacy and numeracy abilities, rather than just academic performance.

This reform is a part of a larger initiative to remedy the shortcomings of the previous 8-4-4 educational system, which placed a strong emphasis on academics and rote learning and may have hindered the development of critical thinking abilities and values that are crucial for character development. The new system aims to be more accommodating and sensitive to the demands of each individual student.
