When it comes to regulating the teaching profession in Kenya, including registration, recruiting, promotions, transfers, and timely salary payments, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is absolutely essential. TSC has recently been working hard to address teacher shortages and promote better pay for educators.
Since 2019, instructors who began their careers as interns have been recognized as permanent, pensionable employees, which is a significant milestone. This guarantees these committed instructors a job as well as financial security.
In order to facilitate the switch to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), TSC launched a recruitment campaign in February of this year that resulted in the recruitment of about 20,000 trainee teachers. There are still some trainee teachers on probation, but there are plans to move all of them to permanent posts with pension benefits, which would represent a huge shift in Kenya’s teaching labor market.
All trainee teachers now employed in elementary and secondary schools are anticipated to get official confirmation letters confirming their transition to permanent, pensionable posts prior to the start of the 2024–2025 academic year.Through these actions, TSC has demonstrated its proactive attitude to ensuring Kenya’s educational future and the welfare of its teaching workforce. This is a step in the right direction in addressing the difficulties that educators around the nation confront.
