The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has disavowed Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei’s plan to increase the number of terms that a president may serve in office.
The ruling party pointed out that the senator’s opinions did not represent those of the Head of State in a statement dated September 25 and bearing the signature of UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala.
The statement said, in part, “The UDA Party respects and supports the Senator’s personal views, but particularly on the referenced subject, those views do not reflect the perspectives of the UDA Party and/or its Party Leader, H.E. the President, William Ruto.”The President solemnly swore to respect, uphold, and defend the Constitution, which is abundantly clear and categorical regarding the Presidential term limit.”
Malala added that the party was committed to keeping its commitments and that it will soon present its scorecard for public evaluation. Respectfully, the statement continued, “Therefore, the term limit debate is superfluous and irrelevant.”
In a memo he gave to the National Dialogue Committee, Cherargei suggested that the president’s term restriction of five years be increased to seven years.
The senator contended that the five-year limit wasn’t long enough for the state to function properly and for Ruto’s administration to fulfill its campaign pledges.
The plan was also opposed by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, a supporter of the current regime. He claimed that the state should conduct its business within the allotted time limit.
“Extension of the constitutional presidential term limit as proposed by Senator of Nandi County, Cherargei, should be dismissed with the contempt that it deserves,” he tweeted.
The senator is the fourth senior UDA leader to make a proposal to increase the presidential term limit as outlined in Kenya’s 2010 Constitution. Salah Yakub, a Fafi Member of Parliament (MP), suggested last year that the 10-year restriction be removed and that the maximum age to run for president be set at 75.
However, President William Ruto has publicly opposed the movement. Nominated senator Karen Nyamu has also publicly backed the elimination of term limits. John Kinyua, a senator from Laikipia, advocated for the removal of term limits for both the presidency and the governorship in August. He claimed that doing so would enable those in charge of these two levels of government to more effectively carry out their obligations to Kenyans.
