TSC criticized for committing its responsibility to politicians
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC), according to Zablon Awange, the executive secretary of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Kisumu branch, has been accused of failing to uphold its duties by permitting political interference.
Awange expressed disappointment that the TSC, which is in charge of hiring, promoting, and employing teachers, has witnessed politicians assuming these responsibilities. He cited examples of politicians, including cabinet secretaries, who he believes have violated the TSC’s role by publicly distributing employment letters. He claims that when delivering these letters, these officials frequently give preference to their friends and family.
Awange also brought up the problem of bias in county-wide teacher promotions. He noted that several teachers who had previously voiced concerns about this matter had been subject to transfers as a sort of disciplinary action. As the head of KUPPET, Awange urged the government to investigate the cases of teachers who had been fired for a variety of reasons and to forgive those with weak or illegitimate claims.
