In King’ong’o, Uasin Gishu County, on Tuesday, four police officers attempted to make an arrest during a routine patrol . But they were instead imprisoned in a chang’aa den by irate villagers. Before the suspects resisted being arrested, the officers had tried to arrest the settlement’s drinkers. When the suspects did, a crowd gathered and locked the officers up.
The cops were taken down by the townspeople, who then imprisoned them inside the home they had just robbed. According to a police report, the owner of the home was the focus of the Uasin Gishu County police officers from King’ong’o Police Station who believed the owner was selling illegal alcohol.
“The officers were on patrol when they raided a chang’aa den. The unruly mob started throwing stones and other objects at the officers who were holed up in the two bedroomed house. Accusing officers of targeting their area every time they carried out crackdowns on illicit alcohol,” the statement read in parts.
On realising that they were cornered, the officers made phone calls to their colleagues for help.
“The officers raided a chang’aa den while they were on patrol. In parts of the statement, it was stated, “The angry mob began hurling stones and other objects at the officers who were holed up in the two-bedroom residence. Accusing them of targeting their area whenever they carried out crackdowns on illicit booze. The officers called their colleagues for assistance after realizing they were surrounded.
Parts of the statement said, “The officers were later rescued by fellow officers who were joined by County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi.” The police took evidence, including several liters of chang’aa. The conflict between the locals and the officers did not result in any complaints of property damage or injuries. The government has redoubled its efforts to combat illegal alcohol, which is thought to harm millions of Kenyans.
Chang’aa distillers have previously been charged of utilizing hazardous substances that have a negative impact on health. Rigathi Gachagua, the deputy president, had already ordered illegal brewers to stop the crime and warned that no one would be spared by the State.
