Lazio blames Manchester United for Mason Greenwood’s deadline day transfer collapse

As a result of their internal investigation regarding his arrest in January 2022 for  attempted rape, controlling behavior, and assault, United said this month that  Greenwood would not play for the club again. After the allegations against Greenwood were dropped in February, the 21-year-old’s future at Old Trafford, including the possibility of being reintegrated into Erik  ten Hag’s team, has been up for debate for several months. Greenwood is currently attempting to advance his career somewhere after United  ultimately opted against his return.

Lazio had held extensive talks over signing Greenwood on the final day of the summer transfer window but ran out of time in order to complete a deal with United.

Lazio’s president, Claudio Lotito, claims Greenwood was keen to join the Serie A club but United did not sign the paperwork in time.

Lotito said to La Lazio Siamo Noi immediately after the Italian transfer market closed on Friday night, “I tried until the last minute.”They failed to timely countersign. He desired to see Lazio.Lotito responded, “Let’s see,” when asked if Lazio will attempt again in the January window.Lazio head coach Maurizio Sarri reportedly opposed the club’s efforts to recruit Greenwood owing to reservations about the player’s attitude and level of fitness, according to La Lazio Siamo Noi.

Greenwood still has two years left on his £75,000-per-week contract with United despite the fact that he hasn’t participated in a competitive game since January 2022.The transfer window for the Turkish Super Lig is still open until September 15, so the 21-year-old could yet join them.Another potential location for Greenwood is Saudi Arabia, where the transfer window will close on September 7.
